Obituary

Obituary for Betty Lou Austin (Jelley)

Betty Lou Austin, née  Jelley, 83 of De Soto IL passed away on Feb. 16, 2019, surrounded by her loving family.

Betty was born on January 1, 1936, in HerrIn Illinois to James Arthur Jelley and Francis Amanda Bradshaw Jelley.

Betty retired in 2004 from SIU as a Custodial Supervisor after 20+ years of service. (Go Dawgs)! Prior to working at SIU, she worked at H&M salvage, Consolidated Coal, and at many local establishments including The Patrician, Carbondale Elks, and Tom’s Place in DeSoto. Betty was a hard worker and dedicated to supporting her family.

Betty was an avid bowler, bowling in a league in Carbondale with Burris disposal for many years and she loved to play bingo, having “her table & chair” at every place she played. Betty’s support for her family and their sports activities were always apparent as you were hard pressed to miss her on the sidelines at an event.

Betty is survived by her son Mike (Janet) Austin, Shawna (Delite) DeBolt, and Son-in-Law Ronnie Smith.

Her grandchildren Mark (Crystal) King, Erica (Micah) Hallman, Megan Austin, and Chelsie (David) Ragan

Her five great grandchildren Christian King, Taylor Streeter, Cameron King, Levi Gale Hallman and Abigail Raye Miles, and her great-great granddaughter Laila King.

Betty is also survived by many nieces, nephews and dear friends.

Additionally, she was a very special Grandmother to her grand-pups Olive & Fiona.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister and brother-in-law Joy and Kiker Harris, a daughter Gail Diann Smith and grand baby infant Austin.

The Family would like to Acknowledge and Thank with all our hearts the great care provided to our dear matriarch allowing her to remain at home with dignity the last few years of her life. This care was given by her niece, Rita Stephenson, Tiffany Reed, Murron Qualls, Lisa Smith, Raelyn Blumenstock, Miranda VanZandt, Samantha Kirkpatrick, Sarah Klosterman, and Haley Holland.

Funeral services will be held at 1 pm Wednesday, February 20, 2019, at Pettett Funeral Home and burial at Murdale Gardens of Memory. Visitation will be from 11 am to 1 pm at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Murphysboro Food Pantry, the Murphysboro Education Foundation, or the Alzheimer's Association.

Mike,
I'm so sorry for your loss of your Mom. I loved Betty dearly. I have fond memories of our vacations to Florida, etc. You, your Mom, and Gail were always family to me. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.

Shawna and family, I am so sorry for your loss. Its been many moons since I have seen or heard from Betty, and of course you Shawna; but never the less I have such fond childhood memories of Betty and my Grandmother Juanita Young playing Yahtzee till the wee hours of the night, while Shawna and I played Barbies. While the Desoto train would rumble by and shake the house. Also; when we all took a trip to Disney World. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.
